  • BEFORE THE CONSULTATION

We recommend wearing comfortable clothing to your appointment that is light and flexible to make it easier for your osteopath to examine you and provide treatment. Activewear, leggings or shorts and t-shirts are good options to allow you to move around with ease.

Please arrive at the earliest, 5 minutes before your appointment so that we can make the most of your consultation.

    CASE HISTORY

During your initial consultation, your osteopath will take a detailed case history which includes questions about your presenting complaint, medical history, previous injuries, lifestyle, and overall bio-psycho-social wellbeing.

This process allows your osteopath to develop an accurate understanding of your overall health and wellbeing and identify any factors that may be contributing to your complaint.

    PHYSICAL EXAMINATION

Following the case history, your osteopath will ask you to actively perform some simple movements -depending on your ability to move comfortably.

This helps us to assess any obvious impairments in mobility, posture, gait and identify any compensations occurring in the body. If required specific testing (orthopaedic, neurological, and cardiorespiratory) may be performed by your osteopath.

You may be asked to remove some outer clothing, jewellery, or belt to make assessment easier. We respect you so if you are uncomfortable with anything please do not hesitate to let us know. Draping of towels will be used to maintain your comfort and respect your modesty as required.

Osteopathic treatment has been identified through research to be one of the safest forms of treatment. However as with all forms of healthcare which offer significant benefits, there is also some level of risk. We require every patient to make an informed decision about beginning osteopathic treatment.

*All children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by their parent or guardian.

  • If your condition requires referral
for imaging or specialist care we will explain this to you and how to proceed, while providing you with on-going support.

Osteopathic treatment is hands-on and your comfort is our priority, which is why we will always explain what we are going to do and gain your informed consent before proceeding with any form of treatment. Your verbal consent will always be obtained before any manipulation is given, and you may withdraw your consent at any time.

Treatment is personalised depending on what your body requires and may include a combination of mobilisation, stretching and massage of the soft tissues, articulation and manipulation of specific joints, and cranial osteopathy applied through very light touch to various parts of the body.

Our focus is to identify and treat the cause of pain/discomfort and any maintaining factors (rather than chase the symptoms). For this reason, your osteopath will treat various other areas of your body in addition to the site of pain to help restore balance and improve the overall function of your whole body.

  • Following treatment your osteopath will discuss your management plan and provide you with advice to help you maintain the treatment benefits. Advice may include stretches, activity and lifestyle modifications, pain management and anything else you may require.

It’s important to note that everyone’s physical response to treatment will vary and cannot always be predicted. You may feel some discomfort or tenderness after treatment as your body continues to rebalance itself. This is quite common and should subside within 24-48 hours of treatment -depending on the nature of your presenting complaint. Your osteopath will always discuss any potential treatment effects with you and how to manage them.

If you have any concerns about treatment effects or feel more discomfort, then you expected please do not hesitate to contact us so that we can address your concerns and take the appropriate steps to speed up your recovery.

The number of treatments you may require is individual and dependant on the type of complaint you present with, severity of injury, chronicity, response to treatment and other factors. Where some people require only 1-2 treatments, others may need more to reach their goals and maintain a pain-free lifestyle. Your osteopath will discuss what expectations are realistic for you as early as possible.

My Body Osteopathy is here to support you on your journey through every age, stage and hurdle, so that you can live your best pain-free life.
